figure them out for 34 years. i began as a young social worker in south los angeles. with gang infested housing projects that are now almost mythic, jordan downs and nickerson gardens, and i worked in these projects during what is referred to as the decade of death, when crack and unregulated gun availability laid waste to communities of color. in los angeles during the late 1980's and early 1990's, there were 1000 homicides per year in the city of los angeles, not the county, the city. now, we have between 203 hundred homicides per year. people talk about the gang problem having been addressed. i want to share with you, what i experienced, what i have learned, i am not a typical academic. i will not quote statistics to you or talk about theories. i will talk with you about practicality. pragmatic approaches, and i will talk about reality. san francisco, like los angeles learned, will never saw or deal with its gang problems effectively unless there is true collaboration. i will talk to you about what this looks like and feels like. i will speak to you about the lessons that we

another capacity in the late 1990s when he was covering the charter of -- [inaudible] in los angeles as part of city government. i was chairing an elected commission in los angeles to revise the city charter, and i saw then that he not only was amazingly talented, but a reporter of enormous integrity. at one point he believed the los angeles times was not devoting nearly enough time to charter reform, it was important to the city, and according to los angeles weekly, he quit his position at the los angeles times in protest over this. he put his very job on the line because he believed in the importance of the story. he was then and is now an enormous star of the los angeles times. and as a result of that, the los angeles times decided to change it approach and gave tremendous attention to charter reform. i will always believe that charter reform succeeded in 1999 in los angeles because of what jim newton did and the covers of the l.a. times. a few years ago he mentioned to me he was planning to take some time off to do a biography of earl warren. i thought it was a great idea. and then

los angeles mr. obama will be joined by bill clinton at a fund-raiser. and the president continues to shatter records. he's nearly doubled the number of fund-raisers george bush held and has dwarfed his other predecessors. it's paid off. last month a new fund-raising record, $181 million in just 30 days. a total of 835 million breaking his own record of four years ago. mitt romney has raised at least $548 million and here's what's remarkable, if both men had stayed in what's known as the public financing system in which they can't take huge donations but then get matching federal funds, they could have only each spent $135 million. that means the president has really raised six times what he would have been allowed if he had stayed in the public financing system. now, mitt romney is going to continue today to try and flip florida into his column. he has another appearance in port st. lucie later on today. >> astonishing number, david, thank you. >>> we'll turn to the political showdown not between presidential candidates, but rather cable tv heavyweights and in one corner "the daily s

the los angeles county metropolitan transportation authority in the board office where metro r which is their third sales tax that provides transportation revenue for transit projects and they're looking to accelerate those projects currently with a new bond measure this upcoming year. i worked with a lot of the directors that compiled a lot of those different projects. and my first transportation job was actually as a high cooler at muni in the service planning department. so, i have a lot of transportation expertise. i work with student government on city college of san francisco and i also just have an immense desire to see a lot more transportation improvements in the balboa park corridor. i have a great relationship with john avalos, supervisor avalos and i continue to work with trustee issues. that is the bulk of where a lot of riders are. we need a light rail [speaker not understood]. the second highest transportation [inaudible] outside of downtown. so, that's why i submit my application for seats 1, 2, 3 or 4. i think i'm eligible for all four of those. thank you. >> t

working in los angeles. after being a patrol officer for just a few months, you are placed on gang detail. you have arrested a youth. instead of taking him to jail, you taken to his mother. the mother says, can you make him more afraid of you that of the gang members? the academy does not prepare you for that. i take that experience and i realized in the gang environment, most of these youths are coming from single- family households. in the area where the gang violence is most prevalent, great citizens of the community, 99% of those citizens are afraid. as a prosecutor, i take this experience and figure out how i want to enforce gang violence, especially in san francisco. i break it down into three categories. you have the individual who is not fully immersed in the gang lifestyle. he is just an associate comment just hanging out. -- associates, just hanging out. for that individual, we try to work with community-based programs. i've met with dcyf, the african- american steering committee, people haven't been in this violence and i say to them, what can -- people have been in this

francisco 35 years ago was because there was not a large population here. i moved from los angeles and it's grown 50,000 people in those years. i don't want to see it grow further per se and i'm not a fan of developing more housing but to answer the question if we add more housing i would say loosen up the rules to allow homeowners to create inlaw apartments and that way you open up unit availability at some level for additional housing. other than that i would be opposed to any new construction of any major land use of development for housing including the three major projects in the pipeline. >> mr. rogers. >> if there is going to be development it could be in the trans bays terminal that is truly close to rapid transit. walking distance to bart. walking distance to the train that heads down south. this would be an ideal place for a development to occur. a place like park merced where you have 17,000 people would be moving in there. 6,000 parking stalls, a car dependent project, right next to 19th avenue. you folks know how bad that is. how would it be better if we had more people li

obama is in los angeles at this hour. he's there raising cash at a fund-raiser. you may recall he just set a record of $181 million in september. white house correspondent dan lothian is traveling with the president. dan, at this point he's on record to raise almost a billion dollars now, and that's not including those outside super-pacs. how much is he expecting to raise tonight? >> reporter: well, millions of dollars, and we'll try to break that down later on in the evening, exactly how much they're expected to raise. they really believe this is important money that they need for a couple of reasons. first of all, the race is very tight. when you look at the national numbers, the race is very close. then you break it down to those key battleground states in ohio, in florida, in colorado and virginia. very close there as well. so they need it this money to really beef up their ground operation going into election day and also saturate the air wae waves with the telephone ads. they're bringing in millions of dollars. a lot is going out the door as well, fredricka. >> so, dan, a lot of
